Recent phenomenon in the last few months - street- parked cars that haven’t moved for a looong time.

Soo many filthy luxury cars in my building’s garage. I think probably most of them belong to wealthy foreign students who either got stuck out of the country when COVID hit, or just decided they were safer overseas than here (not unwise, my city’s COVID rate is pretty high).

Don’t dismiss the possibility of perpetual underemployment. I was working at a humble apartment complex last week with many bright “warning — we will tow” stickers on driver’s windows for expired tabs, when previously I would see few or none.

A battered 1980s motorhome from California showed up on my street a few months ago and has been parked
illegally at the curb in front of my house for most of that time, taking up 4 spots in a neighborhood with barely enough parking as-is and making it impossible to mow the lawn properly, since it overhangs the curb. Lately, I’ve been thinking it could be abandoned, considering reporting it, but also don’t want to start anything with neighbors, since obviously the guy who’s house its parked by would be the one to call it in.

I’d call that in.
Years ago I had an elderly neighbour who would use taxis to get to and from the doctors office, groceries etc. She had mobility issues. To the point I’d shovel her walk before my own even if I was going to be late going somewhere. The neighbour beside her parked some beat up truck right at the end of her sidewalk and wouldn’t move it making it very hard for her to come and go. I even went over and asked them and they told me not so politely to “something something myself with a something shovel”.
So I waited 2 days and then at the rosey hour of 3am pulled all four of their valve stem cores out, and called the bylaw office who came and issued a citation and marked the tires. It was towed in two days and never returned. I have zero guilt. My elderly neighbour carried on living in her house for another few years and those less than polite neighbours were later evicted and charged with a bunch of other unrelated stuff.
Not saying deflate the tires.... but I’d make a call.

I probably should. The annoying thing is everyone here has decent sized back and side yards that you could pull something like that into. That’s probably against zoning, too, but I know I absolutely wouldn’t give two shits if a neighbor had an RV parked on their own property, its the public street that everyone uses that bugs me. Residents can park a motorhome on the street
24 hours without a permit, 72 hours with a city permit, non-residents 7 days, that’s it. Its been like 2 months by now, and the thing is an eyesore, and is making it tough when I need to temporarily street park to move cars around in the driveway/garage, or when family comes to visit. Pretty sure the tag is expired, too, or at least is faded to where its unreadable.

I’m surprised this wasn’t obvious earlier. There must be tens of millions of people with literally nowhere to go that can’t afford to pay the expenses involved in owning extra cars.

It’s becoming a thing in my neighborhood. There are two Tauruses and a Honda Accord out on the street nearby that never move. One Taurus is a very beat up V8 SHO. Also someone has a mid-80's Chevy C1500 with a manual, but at least that one gets driven occasionally.

I’d definitely make the call. Especially if there’s potential for it to be parked elsewhere. At the very least in front of their own home. I’d never be one to say you can’t park on the street. But at least “abandon” vehicles in front of your own property and not all over the neighbourhood.
